Green Week Embroidery Workshop | 11 February 2019
1000 Coats is a collaborative project between artist Whitney McVeigh, Social Responsibility at LCF and east London communities.
The aim is to cultivate, strengthen and connect to local communities through technical skills sewing development workshops where children’s coats will be co-created for local children.
Workshops are delivered using donated over-stock, end of line or waste fabrics and materials.
The projects uses a spiral as it represents widening communities, knowledge and our evolving journey through life, as it begins in the centre and expands outwardly. The eventual aim will be to embroider a spiral into the coats facing, where every participant will have the opportunity to make their individual mark before the coats make their way back into the community.
The workshop was the opportunity to design and embroider our own spiral onto waste fabric. For my own inspiration I looked at some of my own pots which I have made in ceramics classes over the past few years. Where being centred both mentally and physically is key.
